Blackbird to perform at the Ladysmith Show
Blackbyrd will be performing at the Ladysmith Show in 16 May 2014 on Friday night. They are considered one of South Africa’s top all female acts.
The dynamic trio made up of three beautiful young ladies who are talented, friendly and charming, have made a big impact on the South African music scene with their energetic live performances, singing and playing guitars. Their popularity nationally has increased rapidly, especially since the release of their critically-acclaimed debut album “STRONG” on the famous EMI label (now part of the major world-wide Universal Group) for which they earned no less than four SAMA nominations . . . Best Adult Contemporary, Best Duo or Group, Best Producer and the one with which they triumphed . . . namely Best Engineer (the very talented Mark Beling).
BlackByrd consists of Capetonian song-writer, lead singer and guitarist, Tarryn Lamb, her cousin Tamsyn Maker, also from Cape Town, who plays rhythm guitar and sings back-up vocals, and who was originally a dynamic award-winning dancer. Most recent member, Axene, second lead singer and lead guitarist, Vredenburg-born and now Johannesburg-resident, was the youngest ever SAMA winner at just sixteen, with her solo debut album “16”. All three ladies bring different degrees of beauty, talent and personality to the trio, making for a dynamic cocktail with tremendous audience appeal. Leader Tarryn Lamb, a graduate and stand-out student of the Cape Town Waterfront Theatre School, brings her vast show-business experience to the group, and has an amazing ability to communicate with her audiences, ensuring great success with BlackByrd’s live events which goes way beyond three gorgeous young ladies delivering great original music.
BlackByrd made waves throughout South Africa when their first chart-topping single off the album, “All For Me”, was aired extensively during Women’s Month of August last year, and again during the Sixteen Days of Activism Campaign against the Abuse of Women and Children during November/December. This track (the underlying message of which urges women to be true to themselves, and stand up for their rights, particularly against the abuse of women and children) ended 2012 as the top South African song of the year on Highveld 94.7 and Kfm 94.5, and reached the number four slot overall (including all international songs).
Their second hit single, “I Feel Good Today”, reached the number 1 position on the Kia Take 40 SA Charts of both Highveld and Kfm, and Jacaranda’s Kia Top 20 Chart, and has the honour of being the theme song of the SABC3 morning television show, “Expresso”. The third single “From the Bottom of My Heart”, which features Craig Hinds from Watershed, also stayed true to the success of their first two singles when it shot to no 1 on Jacaranda, Highveld, Kfm and Algoa fm’s radio charts. With more hits to follow . . . the sky is the limit!
BlackByrd is musically innovative with their interesting combination of pop, country and ballads, as recorded on their excellent album “STRONG”, which consists of all their own original music written by lead singer, Tarryn Lamb (except for one track, the classic “Reason to Believe”). However, when they do functions, concerts and corporate events etc, the versatile ladies perform an amazing cross-section of a wide variety of musical genres to cover all tastes. Included are medleys of hits from the early sixties, and other popular eras, covers of the latest crowd-pleasing hit songs, as well as plenty of material inviting audience participation.
All in all, they provide a guaranteed formula for success that’s proved itself over and over, wherever the BlackByrd girls take to the stage to entertain . . . resulting almost always in repeat bookings from extremely satisfied clients. Numbered amongst their many valued clients are such heavy-weight corporates as Sun International, Tsogo Sun, Momentum, Bidvest, Pick ‘n Pay, Spar and Checkers to name a few. They have also proved to be very popular on major concert events such as 94.7’s Jo’burg Day and Kfm’s K-Day, the 702 concert as well as many high-profile events during the 2010 World Cup. In addition, BlackByrd have performed at many outdoor festivals, Mardi Gras, Mayoral Concerts, Christmas and year-end functions, etc. etc.
Just recently, during 2013, BlackByrd has begun to make an impact on the South African Afrikaans music market after having successfully performed at major Afrikaans festivals such as KKNK, Innibos, Gariepfees and, most recently, Namaquafees in Vredendal. They were also selected as support act for various top international performers like legendary British act Mike and the Mechanics, Italian singing sensation Patrizio Buanne and top British funk artist Jamiroquai, with concert-goers enthusing about their excellent live performances and clamouring to purchase their album at each show.
With their fourth single, ‘Keep On’, also taken from the critically-acclaimed and best-selling album “STRONG” having just been released, BlackByrd go in search of a fourth consecutive number one hit single. All in all, these three warm, friendly and talented young ladies have already proved that they have a great deal to offer the South African public, and have gained great credibility as a hard-working and interesting new force to be reckoned with.
