Chinese community welcomes its New Year with colour and festivity

The District Mayor, Mayor of Newcastle and the Chinese Consulate-General were among honoured guests.

The Sichuan More Than Pandas and 2020 Newcastle Chinese Spring Festival Gala took place in the Industrial Area on January 20, in celebration of the Chinese New Year.

The event began with a spectacular firework display before esteemed guests from China and local dignitaries were officially welcomed. The Chinese Chamber of Commerce invited the Sichuan Provincial Song and Dance Theatre to the event were numerous items depicted the culture.

Chinese cuisine accompanied by refreshing beverages, ensured guests could enjoy a marvellous meal with international entertainment. A ‘happy clown’ entertained guests with his juggling and balancing acts, while a magician turned a flaming platter into ribbons of colour.

District Mayor, Dr Musa Ngubane and Newcastle Mayor, Dr Ntuthuko Mahlaba joined the Chinese Consulate-General among the honoured guests.
