Five hundred athletes from all nine provinces recently travelled to Oudtshoorn to compete in the WAKO Kickboxing Championships.

Of the 500 competitors, 23 represented KwaZulu-Natal.

Among them were athletes from Newcastle Shuriken, who delivered an impressive performance and returned home with a host of medals.

Newcastle athletes deliver strong performances

The following Newcastle Shuriken athletes achieved outstanding results during the tournament:

• Jonathon Uys (Junior Male, Light Contact Para Kickboxing) – Gold
• Jandre van den Berg (Children Male, Light Contact) – Gold
• Kaylee van der Berg (Young Cadets Female, Light Contact) – Silver
• Sian Smit (Young Cadets Male, Light Contact) – Bronze
• Christiaan Pretorius (Young Cadets Male, Light Contact) – Silver
• Rolinda Uys (Older Cadet Female, 65kg) – Silver in Light Contact and Silver in Kick Light
• Zonica Booyse (Older Cadet Female, 60kg) – Gold in Light Contact and Gold in Kick Light

Although he did not place, Dawson Good (Junior Male) showed determination before losing by technical knockout.
