Residents join rhino preservation efforts
The possibility of Africa being reduced to the Big Four is a harsh reality.
Dismayed at the possibility of living in an Africa reduced to the Big Four, the Lions Club of Newcastle has lent its support to KwaZulu-Natal Rhino Watch to raise funds and awareness for the species’ plight.
Tying into the Miss Newcastle 2013 pageant, the Lions Club will utilise the annual 1Rander project to inspire donations from the residents of Newcastle. The project, Mrs Harburn explained, was initiated years earlier by her husband Roberto, of Fancy That Models.
“It is a street parade and collection, where all the contestants endeavour to collect as much as possible at robots and shopping centres across town, shaking their Lions tins and getting people to pledge or donate.”
The 1Rander takes place on November 9, beginning at 10am from the FTM studio. Mrs Harburn said contestants will be attired in ‘fancy dress’, while being transported in Jeeps and other gruff vehicles courtesy of Stucky CJD and Stucky Motors. The Lions ladies will be perched atop the ‘Rhino Horn’ truck, getting into the spirit of things.
“The duration of the awareness drive and fundraising will be until the Miss Newcastle pageant, on November 23.”
Residents are urged to purchase their ‘Rhinose’ from local outlets.
