2 stabbed at municipal swimming pool

Public swimming pools are not taverns or places for lawlessness, says Newcastle Municipality.

Newcastle Municipality has condemned the behaviour of a group of individuals who created utter chaos at the Newcastle public swimming pool on Saturday (October 24), which resulted in two people sustaining stab wounds. Several individuals were arrested by law enforcement for public drinking, assault and drunken driving.

According to Amajuba District police spokesperson Nonjabulo Langa, the incident at the swimming pool involved a group of young men, allegedly from Madadeni, who attacked two men with knives.

“Upon arrival at the scene, the responding officers were unable to locate one of the victims, who had fled, as well as the suspects, who had already left the scene. The other victim, who remained at the scene, declined police assistance,” Langa said.

GBH case opened

According to Langa, the victim that officers had been unable to locate the previous day arrived at the police station on Sunday, accompanied by his parents, and opened an assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm (GBH) case.

“The victim had sustained several stab wounds to his back,” said Langa.

The suspects in the stabbing are still at large and an investigation is ongoing.

“Newcastle SAPS urges anyone who may have information that could assist the investigation to come forward and contact the police,” Langa concluded.

Municipality says pools are not taverns

Newcastle Municipality said it had noted with serious concern the unfortunate incident that occurred, which resulted in several individuals being arrested by law enforcement for public drinking, assault and drunken driving.

“The municipality condemns this behaviour in the strongest possible terms,” said municipal spokesperson Mthandeni Myende.

He continued that, “Our swimming pools are now open for the summer season and are designed as family-friendly facilities meant for children, parents and the elderly to relax, learn to swim, and enjoy recreation in a safe and clean environment. They are not taverns or places for lawlessness.”

Myende said he wished to make it categorically clear that public drinking in and around municipal swimming pool premises is strictly prohibited. “Persons found under the influence of alcohol or drugs will not be allowed entry and will be removed and handed over to SAPS.”

The municipality said it was working with SAPS and Traffic Law Enforcement, and will continue to monitor the pool precincts.

“Anyone found driving under the influence will be arrested and prosecuted. Assault, fighting, intimidation or any form of harassment of other bathers, staff or lifeguards will lead to immediate arrest and a ban from all municipal facilities,” he said.

Rules for pool users

The municipality appeals to all residents to be considerate of others and follow the rules:

  • Behave in a manner that respects families and children around you;
  • Supervise your children at all times;
  • No glass bottles, alcohol or loud and abusive language will be allowed;
  • Obey all rules and instructions from lifeguards and pool officials.

“Law enforcement will increase visibility and enforce strict access control at all swimming pools this season. Let us keep our pools safe, clean and welcoming for all.”
