IEC urges youths to register for voting
Residents are urged to register to vote, ahead of the elections next year.
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) is urging the younger generations to register to vote next year.
Electoral project co-ordinator, Nonhlakanipho Dlungwana confirmed this Saturday and Sunday (November 9 and 10) is officially ‘Voter Registration Weekend’. In the area, 104 separate stations will be open from 8am until 5pm on both days.
“The easiest way to determine where your voting station is, is to visit any station. The presiding officer is trained to offer assistance.”
Asked how residents can confirm their voting status, Ms Dlungwana said the IEC’s Newcastle branch can be reached on 034 312 4078, 034 312 4064 or 034 315 1908. These numbers apply specifically to Newcastle voters.
Alternative methods, she continued, were to dial the toll free line of 080 011 8000, to send an SMS containing the relevant ID number to 32810 or to visit www.elections.org.za Entering your ID number on this website results in an almost instant determination of voting status.
The site also features an interactive map of voting stations in towns across the country, and clicking on a specific ward node highlights the physical address of the voting station.
