All roads led to Winterton on Saturday when the KZN Town of the Year hosted its first street festival called Whacky Winterton Whang.

Visitors from Estcourt, Durban, Dundee and Ladysmith descended on Springfield Road where activities for young and old kept everyone entertained.

Perfect weather added to the success of the event. So says one of the organisers, Annali Honiball who added that 35 stalls that were unique and interesting lined the street. These included Zulu crafts, hats, original and great art, cheeses, pestos, handcrafted knives, clothes, sweets, handbags, beadwork and much, much more.

If that was not enough to tickle your taste buds there were a variety of speciality cakes and baked goodies, pancakes, brekkie buns and a lunch menu that would make you salivate.

For the adventure seekers, there was a zipline experience and segway rides.

A horse and carriage and several vintage cars from Ladysmith were also part of the must-sees. The Winterton Museum also had a fair flow of visitors who photographed the town’s interesting artefacts.

“An excellent band, The Expectations from Ladysmith, performed the whole day, alternating with a Zulu choir, Zulu poets and an excellent Zulu dance group, which drew lots of attention,” remarked Mrs Honiball. A busload of media also spent the weekend in Winterton. Mrs Honiball adds that the friendly and lively vibe and success at the Whacky Winterton Whang has ensured that it will definitely be an annual event, with the hope of it being hosted twice a year.
