Former K9 Unit officer Siyabonga ‘Alex’ Mkwanya saw his application for acquittal denied by High Court Judge Anton van Zyl on Tuesday.
The Dog Unit officer is on trial with four other men in connection with a 2009 cash-in-transit heist which saw two people killed and another seriously injured.
The judge refused the application on the grounds that he was not satisfied there was no possibility of Mkwanya being convicted.
The cash-in-transit heist was carried out with brutal military-like efficiency. On August 30, 2009, a van carrying a large sum of money was rammed by a large truck. The robbers then used explosives to blow open the back of the vehicle.
Two security guards were killed, along with one of the robbers.
Alex, who was a sergeant in the K9 Unit at the time, was linked to the robbery by circumstantial evidence and cell-phone and other communication records. This includes being in contact with the alleged mastermind of the robbery who was later killed in a police shoot-out. The case continues…
