RTI stops 226 vehicles in N11 road safety operation

A multi-disciplinary roadblock at the Chelmsford intersection resulted in 23 traffic offences being recorded.

The Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) in Dundee stopped 226 vehicles during a multi-disciplinary road safety operation on the N11 at the Chelmsford intersection.

The operation, held during Transport Month on Friday, involved the South African Police Service (SAPS), the Department of Correctional Services, and the Newcastle and Dannhauser local municipalities.

According to KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma, the operation resulted in 23 traffic offences being recorded against motorists.

Two motorists were caught driving without professional driving permits (PrDPs), while another driver was found to have an outstanding warrant of arrest.

Duma commended RTI Dundee for leading the operation, saying the joint effort demonstrated the province’s approach to road safety ahead of the festive season.

He said the authorities would increase RTI visibility as traffic volumes rise during the holiday period.

“Irresponsible driver behaviour remains the primary contributor to road crashes,” Duma said, pointing to distracted driving, driving under the influence of alcohol, speeding and failure to obey traffic rules as major concerns.

He said the province was determined to repeat the decline in road crashes and fatalities recorded during the previous festive season.

The operation forms part of the provincial government’s #NenzaniLaEzweni campaign, which brings different law enforcement agencies and municipalities together to address road safety and compliance.

Duma said the operation demonstrated the value of co-operation between law enforcement agencies as authorities prepare for the busy festive-season travel period.
