St Dominic’s Academy hosts sport prize giving

The school was privileged to have Gareth Edwards as the guest speaker.

St Dominic’s Academy Newcastle recently held its annual Sports Prize Giving Ceremony and wishes to congratulate all the sportsmen and -women on their outstanding performances during the year, especially to Joshua Gibbs and Janè van Dyk who were crowned Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year.

The school was privileged to have Gareth Edwards as the guest speaker. Presently, Gareth holds the position of anchor/presenter on the ENCA Morning News Today programme. Having been a television journalist and presenter all his working life, Gareth is also an accomplished sportsman in his own right.

He recently completed the Cape Epic 9 day stage race and has ridden the Cape Argus and 94.7 road races numerous times. This year he takes on the full distance Iron Man.

Gareth also spent time as manager/agent for the South African born cyclist, Chris Froom, who recently won the Tour de France.

In his address to the sportsmen and -women of St Dominic’s, Gareth referred to the tenacity and dedication that Chris had to put into his sport in order to achieve glory at the Tour de France. He emphasised that although Chris Froom has achieved fame and fortune on his bicycle, he never underplayed the importance of academic achievement and worked hard alongside his training to achieve academically.
