Crime Watch organises Christmas treat at créche

The team at Newcastle Community Crime Watch (NCCW) are treating children at Peter Pan crèche to an early Christmas party this Friday.

Principal of the créche, Jackie Shongwe, said the special treat NCCW is putting together will mean a lot to the children, whose own parents are too poor to even buy them a Christmas present over the festive season.

“We are very excited. The children need this. It is important for them to know that they haven’t been forgotten and that there are people in the community who really care,” said Ms Shongwe.

NCCW representative, Nadia Aziz, said the Christmas party was the result of a collective effort put in by members who have been collecting donations for a few weeks to make the event possible.

“We are preparing a Christmas box for each of the children that each contain an educational item, a toy, juice, treats, a facecloth, soap, stationery and other special items. Spur has sponsored lunch for the occasion and a kind resident has offered to provide a batch of cupcakes,” said Mrs Aziz.

“We chose Peter Pan as the organisation we wanted to support because it is one of the less mentioned organisations despite the great work it does. If it wasn’t for Peter Pan, these children would be unable to participate in the school readiness programme.”

Any funds that are left over from the Christmas party will be used to purchase supplies for the créche.
