Making the best of every opportunity

Spending quality time with friends and family is top priority for Renè Potgieter (19), First Princess, Service Ambassador and Jenny Swimwear winner at the Miss Newcastle event.

Ms Potgieter has a shy personality and an easy smile. She laughs often, showing a happy and carefree approach to life, which she has embraced.

“I don’t really sit and watch television. I would rather take a walk outside or visit my grandmother,” she said. “Spending quality time with my family is very important to me. Life is so short and people come and go so fast, we must live each day as if it is the last.”

Working as a fitness instructor, Renè is planning on studying next year. “I would like to study child psychology. I find the subject very interesting. I don’t see myself as a fitness instructor for the rest of my life.”

Renè started modelling last year when she joined Fancy That Models. The idea to take part in the Miss Newcastle pageant came last year, when her boss asked her if she would like to take part.

“This year was more fun. The girls were all very friendly and that made it a lot easier. I think it was also easier because this was my second year, and my confidence was better,” she said. “Last year’s event seemed more uptight.”

Renè went from an outside top ten finish last year to First Princess this year; a huge leap in success. She attributes the achievement to her participation last year, which boosted her confidence.

“Most people would think that taking part in a competition like this would break down your self-confidence, but it is actually a big boost. You feel good about how you look and you learn to be comfortable in front of people.” she said.

At heart, Renè is a shy person. “Some of the outfits didn’t leave much to the imagination, but it wasn’t too bad; I have learnt to be comfortable with my body.”

During the competition, Renè made friends and grew very close to them. She also attributes her success to her mom. “My mom supported me all the way. She drove me around and made sure I had everything I needed, even though it wasn’t always easy for her,” said Renè. “She was the one who told me that I have to step up my game this year, and I did!”

Renè would like to thank Christine and Rob Harburn from Fancy That Models and all the Lions Club members. Her two friends, without whom she wouldn’t have made it so far, Nicolene van der Nest and Claudine van den Berg. “And a big thank you to my mom and my dad for everything!”

“I have learnt that you must take every opportunity you have and make the best of it. Think outside of the box and be yourself,” she concluded.
