High flyers sign off
Guests were enthralled by an aviation story, with a South African twist.
The Newcastle Flying Club held it’s year end function on November 27 at the Newcastle Club.
The guests were enthralled by a film of two South African small aircraft pioneers, Mike Blyth and James Pitman.
The film follows the two pilots as they took their self designed and built aircraft, just over 40 000 kilometers, around the world.
Between July and august 2009 the pair circumnavigated the globe with many challenges and many adventures.
The guests, almost all pilots themselves, understood the enormous obstacles in their way. This was the first time an aircraft of it’s type had completed such a journey.
“You take a calculated risk when you embark on a trip like this,” said Mike Blyth. “I wouldn’t change anything about the way we did the trip. It was such an emotional journey,” he concluded.
There were many awesome moments throughout the film, which was a true testament for the pilots’ love of flying and the truly South African spirit of adventure.
“Hopefully the movie will be showing on television sometime in the near future. The broadcasters wanted something fresh, a story about aviation with a South African flavour. I think we have given them exactly that,” concluded Mr Blyth.
