A police Provincial Task Team assigned to investigate the murders in Wembezi made two arrests last Thursday.

Two men aged 34 and 35-years-old were arrested during the early morning when detectives swooped on them at their homes in Wembezi at about 4am.

According to police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker, the two men are linked to a murder in Wembezi in early November.

It’s alleged that Sabelo Sokhela (22) who was a party agent during the voter registration received threats on Sunday, November 10.

On the same day at 9.15pm he was en route to his home in Wembezi when he was shot and killed,” explained Colonel Naicker.

The arrested men are expected to appear in the Estcourt Magistrates Court on charges of murder.

The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended the Task Team for the breakthrough.

“I want to allay the fear of the community and assure them that they can trust the SAPS to ensure that justice is served.

We are dealing with the crime in Wembezi using a multidisciplinary approach and have the situation under control.

Those that are responsible for crime in the Wembezi area will be brought to book but we ask that the community be patient while investigators follow the normal protocols in terms of their investigations before an arrest can be made.

We appeal to members of the community; local leadership and community-based organisations within the area to work with police to address crime in Wembezi as police alone cannot win the battle if we do not have the involvement of all role-players.

We also make an humble appeal to those that have information that may assist in current investigations to please come forward,” she said.

The Provincial Task Team comprises of officers from the detective services, visible policing, crime intelligence and public order police.
