Millions in illegal cigarettes seized

The estimated value of the haul is about R7-million.

Illegal cigarettes to the estimated value of R7-million were seized by SAPS members in a bust last Friday.

After a tip-off, a joint team from the Crime Prevention Unit and Crime Intelligence swooped on a locked cargo container abandoned among factory buildings on Gutenberg Street.

Inside, police officials discovered more than 300 sealed boxes containing the contraband.

While the official value of the haul is yet to be determined, officials had already counted 127 boxes, each containing cartons holding 200 cigarettes apiece, by about 2.30pm on Friday.

Police cluster spokesman, Captain Shooz Magudulela later added the value of the haul was about R7-million.

“No arrests have been made but police are currently following on a number of leads,” Cpt Magudulela concluded.
