Estcourt SPAR and TOPS to close down
The municipality has expressed concern about the employees and their families who will be affected.
The confirmed closure of Estcourt SPAR and TOPS, which have served the community for more than 35 years, has raised concerns about job losses and the impact on the local economy.
The Office of the Mayor at Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality issued a statement yesterday (October 22), expressing deep concern, particularly regarding employees and their families who will be affected.
Municipality engages with SPAR management
According to the municipality, SPAR management met with municipal officials last week, including Acting Municipal Manager Mr SP Radebe and General Manager for Planning & Economic Development Miss NAN Msweli, to discuss the impending closure.
During the meeting, the municipality was informed that the closure had been confirmed, as there were currently no buyers or prospective new operators to take over the business.
The municipality said the engagement reflected its concern about the socio-economic implications of the closure and its commitment to protecting residents’ livelihoods.
Concern over jobs and local businesses
The municipality is particularly concerned about employees who face the prospect of losing their jobs, and the families who depend on their income.
The closure could also affect neighbouring businesses that benefit from the customer traffic generated by this retail establishment.
According to the municipality, Estcourt SPAR and TOPS have formed part of the town’s commercial landscape for more than three decades, serving generations of residents and contributing to the local economy.
Municipality reaffirms commitment to economic development
The municipality reiterated its commitment to engaging with relevant stakeholders, supporting local economic development, and creating an environment where businesses can grow and employment opportunities can be protected and expanded.
The municipality emphasised the importance of continued collaboration between government, businesses and other stakeholders to strengthen Estcourt’s economic future amid concerns over the closure.
When contacted, SPAR management said it chose not to comment.
