Ladies’ hair stolen in the toilet?

Of all the things thieves and robbers love to steal, you wouldn’t think hair would be anywhere on the list. However, a new criminal practice seems to be rearing its ugly head, namely stealing women’s hair extensions. Extensions are extremely popular with African women around the country, and Ladysmith is no exception.
Now it seems that Ladysmith women with hair extensions are afraid to use the public toilets in town because apparently men are barging into the toilets, grabbing the women and cutting off their extensions. These brazen and aggressive thieves then sell the hair.
There are many different kinds of hair extensions, but it is not clear if the opportunistic crooks have a preference in what they steal. However, it appears that the longer the extensions are, the better. Maybe this means more money on the street.
“As if crime is not bad enough in this country, now we even have to worry about the hair on our heads. Where will it end? You can hide your cell-phone away when you’re walking in the streets, but what do you do if someone comes out of nowhere and just grabs you by the hair and yanks? This is dangerous and someone is going to end up getting hurt,” said one concerned woman.
Another comment was that, “It’s not fair because you get attached to your lovely locks. You spend years investing in them to make yourself look good, only for some thug to grab you in the toilet and cut off your hair. All this trauma for a few lousy bucks. It’s shocking and unacceptable.”
A Ladysmith Gazette journalist visited a well-known hair salon in town to find out more about extensions and what they cost. “If an extension is cut, a woman cannot use it again. An extension can only be used again if it is removed from where it is woven into the hair itself. It takes two hours for an extension to be placed on a person’s head. The highest price for a hair extension is about R150,” explained the hair salon owner.
Commenting on the matter, Ladysmith police say they have received no reports of people’s hair being stolen.
