THE SECOND and final voter registration weekend was held on Saturday and Sunday, February 8&9, and it would appear that in Vryheid and Bhekuzulu the process went smoothly. Voting stations were open from 8:00am to 5:00pm on both days, with some voters leaving it until the last half hour on the Sunday to register or check their status on the roll. A couple of incidences were observed when a voter could not understand why the IEC officials directed them to another voting station, the instruction being determined by the voter’s residential address. One or two could not understand why they could not vote wherever they wished. Meanwhile, President Jacob Zuma announced that the fifth national and provincial general election will be held on Wednesday, May 7. The Electoral Commission has reminded all stakeholders – including voters and all political parties intending to contest the elections – that the President’s announcement of the date of the election does not constitute official proclamation of the election date. Voter registration will, thus continue until the date of the official proclamation of the election date.
