Yet another municipal car has been written off. A white VW Golf (NDE 801) was involved in an accident on the Nyanyadu road last weekend, where it overturned.
The driver, said to be a recently-appointed municipal official, was alleged to have been under the influence, but this could not be confirmed as it is unclear if any case had been logged with the police.
The crashed car was towed to Dundee by a local panel-beating workshop. It was said that the car was beyond repair.
Endumeni Mayor Thulani Mahaye said he had no information about the accident. Speaker Sduduzo Mdluli told the Courier that he was aware of the accident, and had tried to contact all nearby police stations to establish if an accident report had been lodged.
He said he had seen the car at a local panel-beaters’. Municipal Manager Thabani Biyela confirmed that he knew about the accident, but said ‘I do not have a report in front of me’ when contacted by the Courier.
He promised to call back once he had received more information. When he did call back it was to say he had received a report, but could not divulge details until it had been discussed at a management meeting this week.
It was said that the driver had been busy delivering notices at the time of the accident. But this appeared questionable after it was discovered that the official who had made the report is on three months’ leave, and therefore would not be in a position to comment on the whereabouts of the driver and the car.
Mr Biyela declined to comment further until the management meeting has evaluated the report.
The Mayoral Audi was badly damaged in an accident on the N3 near Durban last October. The vehicle is also at a local panel-beating workshop. Repairs are said to be ‘nearly completed’.
