Strike could have been avoided

Madam,

The mess and inconvenience caused by the illegal strike as reported in your newspaper last week makes one realise just how frustrated our municipal workers have become. It seems that they approached management on numerous occasions with their concerns where promises were made that they would be addressed.

This strike could have been avoided if the municipality had made an effort to address these issues as promised but it looks as if

management do not give workers the respect they deserve and questions their intelligence.

It is understood that councillors’ renumeration is based on a higher municipal grade or size than those of municipal employees. If this is so, council owe the public a full explanation.

Over and above this, it is a known fact that COGTA determines what councillors’ upper limits (maximum) renumeration can be ie. they cannot be paid more than that. This does not mean that they have to be paid less, but of course that never happens.

A forensic investigation should be conducted to look at nepotism, staff competency, (qualifications) continuous creation of top posts but no vacant posts to actually get the job done, corruption, fraud and lifestyle audits.

I support the workers in their endeavours to get answers and closure on all items raised to the municipality.
