Newcastle Air Show shoots for the stars
The 2014 Newcastle Air Show is set to be the highlight of the KZN Winter Air Tour.
Dreams are being given wings, ahead of the fourth annual Newcastle Air Show on May 31.
Organisers confirmed the date has been set, and Newcastle is tipped to once again produce the biggest Air Show on the KwaZulu-Natal Winter Air Tour calendar.
The importance of dreaming big is the theme behind the annual air extravaganza.
Event organisers commented on the importance of allowing children and adults the freedom to dream, with the Air Show set to make dreams come true for one day at least. Through medium of the show, aviation is finally being made accessible to the public. “The Newcastle Air Show is part of the provincial government efforts to bring aviation to regional airports – the air show is also being supported by local government and various private entities,” explained Johan Pieters, organiser of the event.
To further give dreams flight, grade 11 pupils might find themselves soaring through the sky in August. Aeronautic company, Denel is on the hunt for a group of pupils to visit the company’s premises in Johannesburg, particularly those taking mathematics and science on higher grade.

Commenting on the air show itself, Mr Pieters said the community could look forward to planes such as: Slick 540, Bell 222, Impala, MX2, L39, Harvards, Pitts, the Parachute Jumpers, and the highlight of the event, a Boeing 737.
For the adventurous, a ‘helicopter flip’ is being offered to residents.
“This year, the public will also have the opportunity to meet and greet the pilots and their planes, during the lunch break.”
Various promotions and competitions leading up to the air show could see residents walking away with tickets to the event, free helicopter flips and even meeting the crew from Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS). A major prize will also be given away to one lucky guest to the air show.
“All you need to do is to enter at the Information stand. The stand will be set up to provide information about the event and to assist with any questions you may have on the day.”
Food stalls, car exhibitors and more will be on show throughout the day.
