INKANYISO Special School for intellectually and physically challenged learners started a School-to-Work transition programme at the beginning of 2008.

Senior learners (aged 16-21) who have the capabilities and possibilities to fulfil a worker’s role are referred to this programme. The aim of the programme is to prepare learners for the open labour market.

It is being done by means of life skill groups, different projects and work-related tasks in the school. The preparation in the school setup, aims to empower learners with disabilities to take responsibility in a work situation, and to take pride in a job and professional relationships.

It also makes them, aware of the expectations in a real work situation, and the desired values of an employee. The programme is facilitated and monitored by a job coach. Once the learner reaches a specific level of independent functioning, placement in the open labour market is being considered.

On behalf of Inkanyiso Special School, we would like to thank the community and businesses that touch the lives of each learner by providing them with the opportunity to learn and gain work experience through this programme.
