Gwyn to compete in World Championships
On August 28, Mr Pine will compete in an 18.5km time trial. Mr Pine is motivated by competing in the 50+ age group for the first time and is confident being a newcomer will give him an edge over his competitors.
Local cycling powerhouse, Gwyn Pine will compete in the final race of the UCI World Cycling Tour in Ljubljana, Slovenia on August 28 to 31. Cyclists from more than 50 countries will take part in the World Championships in an epic battle for the prestigious title in their respective age groups.
On August 28, Mr Pine will compete in an 18.5km time trial. Mr Pine is motivated by competing in the 50+ age group for the first time and is confident being a newcomer will give him an edge over his competitors.
“Although time trials are extremely intense, I am cautiously optimistic I will bring home the gold,” laughed Mr Pine.
Mr Pine will participate in a 156km road race on August 31. Although he is confident he will get a medal in the time trial, he will face the best of the best in the road race solely for the experience.
Juicing, a low-carbohydrate, high-protein diet coupled with high intensity and endurance training have helped Mr Pine lose 7kg in the build-up to the event. Although the 50-year-old is healthier than most, he hopes to lose a further 2kg.
The Tugela High School teacher admits the World Championships are costing him a pretty penny. “Although travelling to Slovenia is a dream realised, accommodation alone costs 2400 Euros.”
Mr Pine concluded by thanking local sponsors and Mr Price KZN for their contribution. “I will proudly wear the South African flag on my chest as I take on the greatest race of my life.”
