Water will be delivered

oSizweni residents complained bitterly about a lack of access to water last week.
A business owner said he had been left without water for most of the week and at most, water was available for two hours during the day.
Water service delivery in the area has been problematic for a number of years.
Allegedly, many residents in the area were refusing to pay their water bills.
To overcome this, Newcastle Municipality proposed a R20-million smart meter project.
However, Newcastle Mayor, Afzul Rehman said problems had to be identified and rectified first.
“It’s well and good that we want to charge the people for the service, and the smart meters will help with this, but we can’t charge people when our service delivery is not perfect,” said Cllr Rehman.
Apparently, leaks in the waterpipes contributed to sporadic water delivery.
“At times people were only receiving water during the morning or late at night, and this goes against what the Newcastle Municipality stands for,” he explained.
At the moment the feasibility of such an action is being investigated, but the municipality is working towards ensuring water service is no longer hindered in the area.
