Birthdays only come around once

Seven out of ten Newcastillians do not know Newcastle is turning 150 this year.
Aside from a project run earlier in the year by Vodacom Winter Festival, hype around this event has since died down.
Halfway through the year, some residents are upset about the lack of interest.
One of these is Newcastle Mayor, Afzul Rehman.
Cllr Rehman lambasted municipal officials for their lack of initiative regarding this milestone in the town’s history.
“We have budgeted for this milestone, so why are we wasting time with these projects?” asked Cllr Rehman.
Tasking the organisation of future events to the municipal managers office, he said the municipality had taken a formal decision to support this event, and as such work had to be done in this regard.
Cllr Rehman implored all municipal officials to show enthusiasm about the event.
“Our IT department needs to create letterheads and logos for all our emails and documents moving out of the municipality to show our support of this achievement. We are only going to be 150 once, so lets make it a memorable experience,” urged Cllr Rehman.
Another resident, who wished to remain anonymous, believed Newcastle had immense cultural and historical value, and all citizens should take it upon themselves to learn a bit more about their town this year by visiting one of the many historical sites situated in Newcastle.
