Ward 5 residents blame communal homes for woes

“There are a lot of people loitering around, drinking and using drugs. We need the police to be more visible,”

Accusations of drug usage, vandalism and general disruptive behaviour have been brought against the occupants of the communal homes situated in Ward 5.

During a recent public meeting held at Hope High School, residents felt communal houses were a blight in the area.

“There are 30 people living in a four-bedroomed house. This is a recipe for disaster!” exclaimed one resident.

Another irate resident accused the residents of communal homes of vandalism.

“They break walls down and you cannot speak to them about it without them getting upset,” he said.

Another resident was concerned about pedestrians’ safety, especially that of young girls.

“There are a lot of people loitering around, drinking and using drugs. We need the police to be more visible,” he said.

Warrant Officer Simon Luthuli, police spokesperson, said patrols were being conducted, but he would look into the matter.

Ward 5 Councillor, Lindiwe Khoza, expressed her dismay and said the matter would be investigated as she found it unacceptable and it could not be allowed to continue.
