Newcastle’s Guardian

“When I pulled out the man, I wasn’t thinking about being a hero. I just wanted to make sure he was safe,” she reminisced.

Two years ago, a man was rescued from an industrial water pipe by one of Protection Service’s Leading Fire Fighters, Zanele Sibisi.

Last week Tuesday, Centrum Multivitamin and Scott Street Pharmacy paid tribute to the local hero as she is a finalist in the Centrum Guardian 2013.

The Centrum Guardian project recognises those members in the public service sector who go out of their way to make a difference.

Marketing Director of Scott Street Pharmacy, Jameel Butler, explained, “Ms Sibisi was willing to place her life on the line to save someone else; someone she didn’t even know. That is a very unique quality.”

He believed these qualities should be encouraged and recognised.

Centrum Multivitamin and Pfizer sales representative, Kathryn Scott, said plans were under way to promote our local Centrum Guardian, as well as to educate the community on safer lifestyles.

“We want to work closely with our guardians to help them better the communities they live in,” she said.

Ms Sibisi is extremely proud of the recognition given to her for her daring rescue.

“When I pulled out the man, I wasn’t thinking about being a hero. I just wanted to make sure he was safe,” she reminisced.

Ms Sibisi admitted it was an honour for her to have been chosen as a Centrum Guardian.

The amazing story regarding Ms Sibisi’s daring rescue will be aired next week on SABC 1, 2, 3, National Geographic, Crime and Investigation and the Discovery Channel.

To find out more from Ms Sibisi herself about the experience, a Facebook chat will be held on August 8 from 1pm to 2pm on the Centrum Guardian Facebook page.
