RESIDENTS in High Street will tell you it’s a race track, especially at night, and especially on weekend nights. That is why a petition was circulating about two months ago, to get the intersection of Boeren and High streets converted to a four-way stop.
It was partly to slow down High Street traffic, but also to prevent accidents at that intersection. Residents in the vicinity frequently hear the screeches of tyres indicating another near collision. Sometimes those screeches end in a “BANG!”
It ended in a “BANG” again on Saturday evening. Clearly, one of the two vehicles involved in the accident failed to stop in Boeren Street. It would appear that an NV-registered Tazz slammed into the side of a NC-registered Nissan bakkie. Two people in the Tazz sustained injuries. Which vehicle failed to stop is not known.
Nor is it known what has happened to the petition. The municipality failed to respond to questions in this regard.
It would appear, though, that a four-way stop at this intersection is part of the answer, but it still does not guarantee that drivers will actually stop.
An alternative solution, or an additional solution, could be the construction of speed humps at stop signs. Apparently, the intersection of Republic and Kommissie streets was the scene of a number of accidents, and since the construction of a speed bump there has not been one collision at that point.
Until then, all law-abiding drivers can do is check for on-coming traffic even if it’s your right of way.
