The Islamic Educational Centre (IEC) hosted an information session regarding subject choices for their Grade 9 learners, also attended by parents, at the school on Thursday afternoon.
The meeting commenced with a recitation from the Quran by Grade 9 learner Tahir Sardiwalla, including a verse that stated “Let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow,” which was poetic in terms of making good subject choices for an organised future for the youngsters.
Keynote speaker Mrs Abeeda Rassool, a Foundation Phase teacher at the IEC and a qualified guidance counsellor, chaired a wonderful PowerPoint presentation which listed different personality traits of people, as well as a variety of careers that are best suited to these personality types. In addition to this, she also noted the importance of work experience, as well as social and community engagement, as a vital tool in securing university acceptance.
Other speakers included IEC principal Mr RG Reddy, deputy principal Mr AA Moola and Mr I Kader (Head of Department: Humanities). Mr Moola agreed that these subject choices are stepping stones to the future and acknowledged that career choice is a very difficult decision to make. In this respect, he said that parents’ support and guidance is absolutely necessary in helping learners make informed decisions.
The programme concluded with a short question and answer session which addressed parents’ concerns. It was an afternoon that the learners appreciated and that will guide them to making the right subject choices in the final years of their schooling career.
