Police arrested two suspects and recovered three suspected stolen vehicles over the weekend as a result of following up on information about possible stolen vehicles in the Umhlumayo area of Ezakheni.
On arrival at a homestead in the area on Friday (September 19), several people suddenly fled from the houses. Police gave chase and one person was arrested after being found in possession of unlicensed firearms. An R5 rifle, a Z88 pistol and 16 rounds of ammunition were seized.
The suspect, aged 34, is set to appear in the Ezakheni Magistrate’s Court today (Monday). The firearms will be sent for ballistic testing to determine whether they have been used in other crimes in the area or elsewhere.
During a search of the homestead, police found two vehicles which they suspect may be stolen. A second suspect, aged 58, was arrested and faces charges of possession of suspected stolen property. The suspect is also set to appear in the Ezakheni Magistrate’s Court today.
On Saturday night at about 11.30pm, police found a third vehicle in the St Chad’s area of Ezakheni, which they suspect may also have been stolen.
The three vehicles will now be carefully screened by the Ladysmith Vehicle Investigation Unit to determine whether they were indeed stolen and from where, as well as whether identifying marks on the vehicles have been tampered with.
