Weenen Primêr was privileged to be part of the rhino Art Campaign, led by African modern-day explorer, Kingsley Holgate. This campaign is aimed at encouraging the young folk to voice their thoughts about rhino poaching.Having already been involved with our local Game Reserve, it was fitting that our children have the opportunity to be part of this campaign.

It all began with a visit on Thursday, September 11 from Bronwyn Laing and Bruce Leslie from the Art Team, who spoke to our children about Rhino poaching and then launched the art competition. The children were extremely excited to see the Land Rover that is used by Kingsley Holgate’s team and to meet Bruce who travels with him.
Two children were chosen to write a message about conservation on the Land Rover.
On Saturday, September 20, members of the Dunlop Hamba Rally team arrived to run a soccer tournament and judge the art. Donning their own rhino T-shirts, designed by two past pupils, the children waited eagerly for the team to arrive.

They were certainly not disappointed and after an exciting time of playing soccer and interacting with the team, the winners were announced and each child was given a soccer ball, cap and water bottle.
The winner of the art competition was Fezeka Mbele in Grade R and the player of the soccer tournament was Ndaba Ncingane in grade five. We as a school would like to thank all those involved in making this a possibility and we continue to support our heritage in terms of the wild life of our country.
