Family pet – orphaned for jumping fences
A one-year-old dog is desperately looking for a new home, after his family abandoned him at the SPCA.
A woman who abandoned her dog last Friday into the care of the SPCA, has left Heather Gero from the SPCA hot under the collar.
“I am glad the dog is here, safe and sound, but there is a correct way of bringing your dog to us and there is an incorrect way,” Mrs Gero emphasised.
Apparently, the resident brought her dog to the SPCA at 7.30am, before any of the office staff arrived for work.
Handing the dog to the kennel staff, the woman left behind a paper with the dog’s name, her name, a contact number and a message saying the SPCA were to find the dog a new family, because it kept jumping over the wall to leave the yard.
After that, the woman left.
Mrs Gero said attempts to contact the woman for further information were futile and she thought the woman had abandoned the dog.
“The kennel staff don’t know the full procedure when a dog is handed over to the SPCA. There are forms to fill out, especially when looking for a new family for the dog,” she added. “We know nothing about this poor dog, except that he jumps over walls.”
The biggest problem for Mrs Gero was that the dog’s owner allegedly showed little compassion to what had been a family pet. “She obviously did not care about the animal, but only about the hassle it caused her.”
The SPCA would like to see the one-year-old male dog go to a loving family who would dote on it.
“When people want adopt dogs, they want to know the dog’s full history. This makes it easier to know whether the dog will blend in with the family, but we will find a good home for this dog,” Mrs Gero concluded.
