Vesumusa Zuma and Kiasha Pillai, Drakensberg Secondary School grade 11 learners, were one of the five teams representing KZN at the National Moot Court Competition in Pretoria that took place from October 9 – 12.
The learners were also taken on an excursion to the Constitution Hill, Constitution Court and Freedom Park.

They gave an excellent account of themselves at the competition and engaged in meaningful interactions with several high profile dignitaries such as the National Deputy Minister of Education, Enver Surtie; Justices of the Constitutional Court, Justice Cameron and Justice Sisi Khampepe as well as Judge of the High Court, Jody Kollapen.

This is what they had to say about their experiences: “I learnt that we need to overcome individual differences to succeed as a team. I also learnt how to research meaningfully for information, how to speak in public and how to think on my feet. I learnt how to overcome our inferiority complexes when confronted with learners from more advantaged schools and possibly backgrounds. I made myself concentrate on the fact that they were wearing a school uniform just like me and that made us equal”. The Competition assisted me to think more open-minded and out of the box about issues and situations I do get into.

It also has improved my creative lateral thinking, writing and oral skills. I am now sure of the career path that I want to follow.” Kiasha Pillai, learner, Drakensberg Secondary School, KZN. They were accompanied by the school co-ordinator, Mrs. S. Pillai and the KZN district co-ordinators, Mrs. P. T. Njoko and Mrs. Kheswa.
