Treverton Prep’s grade three children went on an excursion to Entabeni, close to the Kamberg, where they visited the Crane Foundation. The children and teacher Cindy Elliott were welcomed by the Shaw family, and two enthusiastic instructors.

The pupils children met and fed Trinity, the wattled crane chick, which was reared at the centre last year.
She has already reached her mature size and she enjoyed the company of the children. They were also introduced to Boston, the crowned crane. He provided a majestic demonstration of his wing span by flying around and then settling on a nearby roof.

The class also visited the wetland area, which has over the years been rehabilitated. Having completed a simple experiment in class, it was interesting for them to see the reality of how the wetland acts as a huge sponge, purifying and releasing the water slowly back into river systems.

Different plants were observed and the children were then encouraged to enjoy the swiftly flowing water and the clay alongside it. Many interesting creations were made from the natural materials. The best way to complete the day of an outdoor classroom and lesson was to hold the traditional picnic in the beautiful surroundings.
