Lennoxton Primary School celebrated 30 years of existence this week.
To mark the special occasion, Lotus FM’s Morning Rush crew aired the entire celebration live from the school on Monday morning.
The crew interacted with pupils and guests, as well as donated 980 pairs of shoes to the school.
Arlette Lazurus, from Lotus FM’s marketing team, said the school shoe donation formed part of the station’s Warm Hearts Campaign. “It formed part of our Madiba Day initiative and every child will get a pair of shoes,” she said.
Mr YD Naidoo, the principal, said the school had grown tremendously since its establishment in 1985, where there were only 20 teachers and a mere 400-odd pupils.
Now, with 30 teachers and 980 pupils, the school reflected how well it had done through the years.
“Many pupils who have passed through our school halls have grown up to be successful people, such as our mayor, Afzul Rehman, who was one of the first group of pupils when the school opened,” Mr Naidoo said.
Mayor, Afzul Rehman said despite the years which had passed, he still felt a great amount of pride in the school. “I think I was in Grade 4 when I came to Lennoxton Primary and I remember how I boasted that I was going to a brand new school,” he beamed.
However, Cllr Rehman said it was vital the reason behind the creation of the school was not forgotten.
Prem Bhagwandas, educational superintendent for the Amajuba district, added to the day’s message of taking education seriously “I am also an old boy of Lennoxton Primary School and whenever I received information about the school, I have felt proud,” he enthused.
Commending teachers and the School Governing Body, Mr Bhagwandas said it was thanks to schools such as Lennoxton Primary, leaders such Cllr Rehman were able to lead our community.
