Firearm found at high school
On inspecting the gun, the officers immediately realised it was in fact a real pistol
A pistol, initially thought to be a toy, was found at a high school in the Burford area yesterday (Tuesday) morning after the Ladysmith Visible Policing Unit and Dog (K9) Unit paid a surprise visit to the school.
A cordon and search operation was conducted by the officers, followed by an awareness campaign in which the learners were educated on the Dangerous Weapons Act and the danger of drugs
During the search, police found a parcel of loose dagga that had been tossed into the school grounds. It weighed approximately 500g.
A while later, it was reported to police that a few knives had been confiscated from learners by the teachers and that a ‘toy’ gun had also been found abandoned on the premises. Police seized 10 knives and on inspecting the gun, they immediately realised it was in fact a real pistol.
It is a Webley and Scott 6.35mm firearm. Police are investigating the origins of the firearm.
The pistol will be sent for ballistic testing to determine if it was involved in any crime in the country.
