Man found on D98 likely died by suicide
Gunpowder residue on the man's hands indicates that he likely fired the fatal shot himself.
Newcastle police have identified the man whose body was discovered along the D98 dirt road, near Ingogo, as a 47-year old farmer who resides in the Memel area.
The body was discovered around 9am yesterday, November 6, lying next to his Toyota Land Cruiser.
There was no sign of robbery as his personal possessions appeared untouched.
Police open inquest
While first responders suspected that the man may have been murdered, unofficial police sources say it is more likely that he died by suicide.
The man’s identity is known to the Newcastle Advertiser, but is being withheld due to the nature of the incident.
Police opened an inquest docket after members of the man’s family indicated that he was experiencing personal issues.
Forensic pathologists have also picked up gunpowder residue on the man’s hands.
The man’s firearm, a 9mm pistol, and one cartridge was recovered from the scene.
A Section 205 investigation will be conducted on the man’s cellphone, which was also recovered on the scene, as investigations continue.
The Newcastle Advertiser extends its condolences to the man’s family.
