During the past week it became a common sight to see furniture left on the grass outside the Estcourt Town Library at the corner of Connor and Victoria streets, which left the community questioning why. Late last year the Department of Arts and Culture decided to refurbish the town library. A week and a half ago it all began, as staff members removed all the 57-year-old furniture and packed books into storage boxes.

“Just a few touch ups are yet to be done but it already looks amazing. The old furniture is of good quality and will be put to use by Youth Development Agency and the branches that they serve,” said senior librarian, Bathobile Nhlabathi. Now with a step into the town library, you welcomed by a wonderfully spacious well-lit room filled with knowledge, despite the heavy stench of paint fumes.

When Miss Nhlabathi was asked how she thinks the new look will benefit the library, she replied: “The new look is a lot more appealing and this will encourage the public to visit the library often.” Students were seen streaming into the newly revamped town library on Thursday. The library, which is mainly used by pupils and students, is expected to see an increase in the number of those who visit it.

The refurbishment of the town library is first in the string of makeovers for libraries in the area. Prior to the makeover, the library had attracted interesting statistics of visits and books rented. Now after the library revamp, it is not only good looking but user-friendly too.

The library staff are hoping the makeover may even encourage the public, mainly students to visit the library more often and make use of research facilities and the wide range of books and the now improved spacious seating area aimed at accommodating more people. The new look promotes the culture of reading and encourages the appreciation of a library as well as the eagerness to learn and stay informed. “I would like to thank the staff for working so hard, Senior Management Planner Mr Hlongwane, Director of PECS Mr Dladla and the municipal staff for assisting with cleaning. As well as Mrs Mangela for supplying transportation for the furniture,” added Miss Nhlabathi with gratitude.

Regular patrons have agreed that the makeover inspires the reading spirit and that the new look has transformed the place into a peaceful looking paradise.
