Newcastle squash players rally for breast cancer support

Newcastle Squash Club raised funds for a member’s mother battling breast cancer:

Newcastle Squash Club’s ‘Breast Cancer Awareness Tournament’ on October 3 brought together 58 players from three different towns for an event that was fiercely competitive and in aid of a great cause.

Club secretary Samantha Jordaan said an invitation to compete was extended to squash clubs in all of the neighbouring towns, with Dundee and Vanderbijlpark heeding the call.

In addition to the tournament, Newcastle Squash Club hosted various fundraising activities, including hair-spraying, a lucky draw raffle, as well as the sale of breast cancer awareness pins and other pink odds and ends.

Jordaan explained that the funds raised will be donated towards the medical treatment of a club member’s mother, who is fighting breast cancer.

“She does not have medical aid and we wanted to support her,” said Jordaan.

She added that the club decided to extend an invitation to neighbouring towns to participate in order to create an opportunity to hone their skills ahead of a big competition taking place later this year.

“When you play the same people every week, you get to know them and how they play, so we wanted to make it more challenging,” she explained. “We also hope to encourage more people to join the club to keep the sport alive in our community.”

Jordaan thanked everyone who supported the event, including the sponsors who made it possible, and the players and supporters who not only dressed up in pink to raise breast cancer awareness, but also generously contributed towards the club’s fundraising efforts.
