The future-conscious aim to keep themselves grounded during Earth Hour tonight.
Between 8.30 and 9.30pm, residents are urged to switch off the lights as part of a global campaign to further awareness of the consequences of climate change.
The Earth Hour website (www.earthhour.org.za) explained the initiative was founded by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) in 2007. An estimated 160 countries across the world participate in the campaign.
“Climate change is the biggest threat humanity has ever faced. Due mostly to the burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas), our average global atmospheric temperature is shooting up and affecting the habitats upon which our lives depend.”
If vital resources continue to diminish, humans will cease to exist. Thus, WWF and the Earth Hour initiative continue to promote alternative energy sources, as well as more sustainable methods of preserving the supplies of food and water.

Ahead of a meeting between world leaders in Paris in December, the website continued, it was important ordinary citizens showed the health of the environment mattered, especially for future generations.
