TECH: Changing children’s electrical smarts
There will be no load shedding when it comes to Eskom attempting to improve children's electricity knowledge.
As one of its main objective’s is to educate people on the importance of using electricity sparingly, Eskom has started an initiative focused on children.
Eskom is currently rolling out an Energy Education Programme on a national level in the form of educator guides and learner materials, as well as educator based workshops.
Fully aligned with the Grade R to Grade 6 Curriculum Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) curriculam, the educator guides and learner material were developed by an education specialist for Eskom.
Supporting Grade R to Grade 6 educators and including user-friendly worksheets for young children, the material covers:
Grade R Home language, Mathematics and life skills.
Home language, first additional language, mathematics and life skills for Grades 1, 2 and 3. It also comprises of English home language, Mathematics, Natural Science and Technology for Grades 4, 5 and 6.
For Grades 7, 8 and 9, the material covers English home language, mathematics, natural science and technology is in production.
A series of DVDs have also been developed to assist childrens’ learning experience about energy efficiency.
The DVDs educational lessons revolved on electricity impacted the environment, how coal is used in the generation of electricity, how to conduct an energy use assessment at home and how to save electricity at home.
A teacher’s classroom aid and e-book for children, comprising a collection of energy saving tips, in the form of children’s stories in picture and verse has also been produced.
The children’s book was specifically developed to teach young children about curbing electricity wastage, through the love of reading.
“Eskom is supporting South Africa’s school education programme to increase awareness of energy efficiency. Using electricity wisely at any age is crucial at a time when our country experiences energy shortages. It is a pleasure to invite South Africa’s educators to use these tools to teach our children about electricity”, said Eskom spokesperson, Khulu Phasiwe.
