A FIRE on Sunday on the farms west of Vryheid destroyed an estimated 2,300 hectares of scarce winter grazing, and an additional 100 hectares of forests.
The fire started at about noon on that day, and thanks to the rapid response by local farmers was under control by 4:45pm.
It is believed by the local Fire Prevention Association (FPA) that the fire was the result of arson.
The AbaQulusi Fire Prevention Officer, Steven Hibbert, said that as a result of the wonderful response of local farmers, there were as many as 23 bakkie sakkies and eight tractor units which responded to the emergency and helped fight the fire.
He sincerely thanked all concerned, including the Working on Fire ground team which also assisted.
Fires seen in the farmlands around Vryheid should be reported to the FPA at 034 982 1882, or Steven Hibbert at 083 769 0467, any time, night or day.
