Top 10 funniest named horses

The Vodacom Durban July is all about the racing, the fashion and the oddly named horses.

As the Durban July fever winds down, we take a lot back at some of the funniest named horses to compete in the race.

From FloatYourBoat to Hill Fifty Four, there have been truly hilarious and strange names that owners have come up with.

One can only wonder how the horses feel.

BUY AND SELL

He may sound like he’s listing goods on a website, but Buy and Sell was anything but an online trader. Buy And Sell finished second in the 2007 race, narrowly losing out to Hunting Tower.

FLOATYOURBOAT

It wasn’t smooth sailing for FloatYourBoat, finishing seventeenth in the 2008 race. However the race was a memorable one for Pocket Power and Dancer’s Daughter as both were crowned winners after finishing in a dead heat.

GOAT

Yes, you read right. Goat was indeed a name of a 2010 runner who finished thirteenth. The oddly named horse didn’t have what it takes to ‘bleat’ Bold Silvano who won the race.

STRATEGIC NEWS

Despite a strategically run race, Strategic News could only finished ninth in the 2008 race. It did beat out other funny name horses like Lion’s Blood and Galant Gagnant though.

CAPTAIN SCOTT

Great Scott, what a name for a horse.
Captain Scott couldn’t lead from the front and finished in fourteenth in the 2010 race.

E-JET

You’ve heard E-Tolls but what about E-Jet? In the 2013 edition of the race, E-Jet could only finish eleventh. The winner was the rockstar horse, Heavy Metal.

FLIRTATION

Flirtation could not use her charms to win the 2011 Durban July and finished fourteenth overall. Another filly, Igugu, took the honours of being crowned champion.

CHERRY ON THE TOP

It wasn’t a sweet ending for Cherry On The Top when she finished thirteenth in the 2014 race. Legislate took the crown and showed the other horses how it should be done.

HILL FIFTY FOUR

It was one hill too many for this horse to climb as he finished second last in the 2013 race. To his credit he didn’t finished last and beat a horse named Seal.

KING OF PAIN

King Of Pain didn’t bring the pain in last year’s race. Instead he finished a lowly tenth but did beat some regal competition in Louis The King.
