An explosive find near Dannhauser
The explosives confiscated from the 29-year-old suspect are the kind generally used in ATM bombings across South Africa.
A 29-year-old man recently appeared before the Dannhauser Magistrates’ Court facing charges for possession of explosives.
The KwaZulu-Natal SAPS Media Centre said the case was remanded pending further investigation.
While Newcastle Public Order Police were conducting routine patrols in the Dannhauser area, they received information about explosives being kept in a home near Nyanyadu.
Police located the suspect’s home and searched it extensively.
“37 explosives suspected to be from the mines were recovered. A suspect who is working in the mines was also arrested and charged with possession of explosives,” read the statement.
KwaZulu-Natal provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended law enforcement officers on a job well done.
“These explosives are the ones that are normally used by criminals to bomb ATMs in and around the country. We will profile the suspect and establish if he is not implicated in the other ATM bombings in the province,” she concluded.
Police investigations continue.
