Police clamp down on burglars

Chinese owned businesses in Riverside Industria have been plagued by burglaries over the past two months.

While foreign nationals feared for their safety, their plight was not unnoticed.

Police spokesperson, Captain Shooz Magudulela, claimed the necessary steps were taken to put an end to the matter.

“The police have increased manpower in the Industrial Area,” he said.

Alex Liu, Chinese Chamber of Commerce chairperson, confirmed a strong police presence.

“We do see and feel the presence of the SAPS, because of the operations currently taking place in Newcastle, Madadeni and oSizweni,” he said.

“The police have decreased the number of burglaries through arrests and concentrated patrols in the affected areas,” Captain Magudulela added.

Recently, the Chinese community formed three teams to patrol the area, hoping to assist the SAPS in minimising burglaries.

The effort was applauded by Captain Magudulela.

“It is the responsibility of all South Africans aged between 18 and 60 to prevent crime. You do not have to touch the criminals, but by making sure you remain safe, collect information and supply it to the police, you have played your part in crime prevention.”

Despite the recent decrease in the burglaries, Captain Magudulela has encouraged business owners to follow the following steps in case of burglary:

1. Remain calm.

2. Make use of panic buttons and save a phone in a place, so you can still phone the police.

3. Supply the police with as much information as possible. “You could help draw a sketch plan of the suspect; therefore it is important to observe the features,” Captain Magudulela said.
