Burn victim toddler in Durban hospital

Their quick action saved what could have been a disaster neighbours said.

The 18-month-old toddler who suffered burns when a fire broke out in an Oaklands flat on Tuesday has been transferred to St Augustine’s Hospital in Durban.

Little Zanenkosi Zulu was said to have been burnt on the face, hands and legs when a bar-heater apparently started a fire in the upstairs room.

The domestic who was looking after her, Nombuso Mpungose, was also slightly burnt.  Speculation is that a duvet may have somehow fallen on to the heater that led to the fire.

The fire smouldered for sometime until the heat shattered the windows, alerting neighbours.  The domestic helper managed to save Zanenkosi from the fire.  Neighbours said the fire brigade was ‘there within seven minutes’ and contained and extinguished the fire.

Their quick action saved what could have been a disaster neighbours said.  Mr Zulu works at Nedbank in Nquthu and his wife in Dundee.  Neighbours wished Zanenkosi a speedy recovery and thanked the fire brigade for their assistance.
