Toddler dies after shack fire
Suffering severe burns a mother and her toddler had to walk to hospital after an ambulance failed to arrive
A three-month-old baby died of severe burns in a shack fire in Mzomusha.
Thandi Shabalala and her daughter, Phumelele Amahle Shabalala, were admitted to the Dundee Hospital on Sunday, where they were transferred to Grey’s Hospital in Pietermaritzburg.
The baby subsequently passed away.
The father told the Courier that the mother and the child had to walk 3km to the hospital after numerous calls to EMRS failed to illicit a response.
Both mother and her child were in severe pain and the father said it was a miracle that they managed to reach the hospital.
Neighbours said it was heart rendering to hear the cries of the burned toddler as the mother struggled her way to the hospital.
Anyone wishing to donate clothes or other items to the family who has lost everything should please contact Mr Zulu, Endumeni Disaster Management at 079 999 9919.
It is alleged that Muzi Sithole (23), who appeared in the Dundee Magistrates Court on September 1, doused the shack with petrol and set it alight after an argument with his girlfriend.
Sithole is expected to appear tomorrow (Friday).
