Durnacol shop owner killed
Community rocked by second murder in two days.

Well known Durnacol shop owner, Piet Maré has passed away after being brutally stabbed last night.
Mr Maré was locking up his store when he was attacked.
He was stabbed twice but the perpetrators didn’t steal anything.
He was rushed to Newcastle Private Hospital where he sadly passed away this morning.
Tributes have poured in for him and Mr Govender who was brutally murdered in Dannhauser on Thursday:

And where does one begin writing about Piet? Do his killers know that they didn’t only rob his family of a father but the whole community? Do his killers know that many struggling families must be reeling knowing that the man who would ensure that they had something to eat is no more? Are they aware of the mouths Piet has fed through his shop. There are families who knew that if they didn’t have anything to eat, Piet would not hesitate opening an account for them (isikweletu). He did not make noise about it but was a silent philanthropist. His shop stood the test of times, from the time the village was abuzz with mining activities, to the times when they closed down and had the area named a ghost-town until recent times, when Durnacol was picking up it’s pieces. We are reeling. We have lost two significant people who had history to tell about our area. They had so much to tell, sadly they have left us in a brutal, callous manner, in the hands of heartless killers. We bow our heads in shame, we cry for our beloved society. Where is the love? May their souls RIP
His murder has rocked the community who are still reeling after the shocking murder of 87-year-old Dannhauser resident, Vee Govender.
