ON FRIDAY, September 11, some learners of Vryheid High School were invited by the Department of Arts and Culture to attend a cultural day at Nongoma Ward 15.
We had two groups, Germans and Afrikaans, who performed as a band and as dancers respectively. Seven of our learners prepared speeches for a speech contest in which they had to inform the audience on what made them different to other cultures. Learners from local schools of the rural areas also took part in the contest. The German group inspired the mainly Zulu audience with a Zulu spiritual medley they played and they were amazed to see the Afrikaans group ‘sokkie’ as couples. At the speech contest Tobias Niebuhr took second place and Malibongwe Zungu was the overall winner. The day was enjoyed by all. Even our bus driver took up the saying: “Waar’s dit lekker? Hier’s dit lekker!” The community of Nongoma Ward 15 sincerely appreciated our presence. “Dit was lekker.”
Cricket boys: On Monday, the 1st side faced Ferrum at home. Batting first, VHS was in big trouble at 23/4, but they pulled through to post 144/7 in their 20 overs. The main contributors with the bat were C High; K Taylor and I Niebuhr. VHS then bowled and restricted Ferrum to 97/8. The best bowlers were I Niebuhr and K Taylor. VHS won by 47 runs.
u/15 Boys: VHS faced Sarel Cilliers away and batted first. They posted a total of 157/8 with T Aitken scoring a fifty. Sarel Cilliers batted and was restricted to 108 all out. It was a team effort with the ball with every bowler chipping in. VHS won by 49 runs.

Cultural Festival: On September 23, VHS will be hosting a Cultural Festival where we will celebrate our diverse cultures. Different food, a fashion show and fun and games will be on the agenda. Learners are encouraged to dress up in their traditional attire.
