Uniting against cancer

Relay For Life (RFL) is a 12-hour campaign dedicated to raising funds and creating awareness about cancer.

The event is set to take place this Saturday at Ferrum High School’s sports grounds from 6pm until Sunday morning.

At the RFL, teams will walk around the sports grounds during the course of the night as a symbolic stand against against cancer.

With momentum in full swing, the Shanti Nivas Shivananda Ashram has entered a team, the first religious organisation to do so for 2015.

“If someone is affected by cancer, the first thing they do is turn to God and religious organisations,” said Guru Sarverson Naidoo from the ashram.

Guru Naidoo felt it was the responsibility of religious organisations to participate in events such as RFL, to help people affected by cancer.

“Religious organisations need to unite to fight cancer, as well as be pillars of support to those who are affected by the disease.”

Newcastle Organisation For The Aged (Nofta) has also entered a team.

Rajesh Ramdaw, Nofta chairperson, said the organisation was dedicated to support CANSA’s event in fighting cancer.

“Since its inception, Nofta has always been a proud supporter of CANSA, as we have lost a lot of our members to cancer. We also have members who have fought the battle and survived. We want to encourage the whole community to champion the cause against cancer. If the aged can do it, everyone can,.” he said.
